Programme description
  • Single operational satellite in geostationary orbit, with several common elements with the INSAT-3 series.   Previous name: MetSat, renamed Kalpana in honor of the lady astronaut of Indian ancestry lost with the accident of the Shuttle “Columbia” in February 2003.
  • Developed and operated by ISRO for the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
  • 3-axis stabilised platform.
  • The design life time of the satellites is 7 years.
  • Positioned at 74°E.

Data circulation
  • CDAS (Command and Data Acquisition Station) for real-time acquisition of the full information.
  • DMDD (Digital Meteorological Data Dissemination) for near-real-time dissemination of images and digital data in HRIT/LRIT format to Indian and surrounding stations.
  • DCS (Data Collection Service) to relay messages from self-timed DCP (Data Collection Platform).
