Satellite Programme: Kalpana
Single operational satellite in geostationary orbit, with several common elements with the INSAT-3 series. Previous name: MetSat, renamed Kalpana in honor of the lady astronaut of Indian ancestry lost with the accident of the Shuttle “Columbia” in February 2003.
Developed and operated by ISRO for the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
3-axis stabilised platform.
The design life time of the satellites is 7 years.
Positioned at 74°E.

DMDD (Digital Meteorological Data Dissemination) for near-real-time dissemination of images and digital data in HRIT/LRIT format to Indian and surrounding stations.
