Satellite Programme: Defense Weather Satellite System (DMSP follow-on)
The DWSS programme is intended to provide continuity to the DMSP programme.
A mission concept, developed after the re-structuring of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) in 2010, was based on two satellites, DWSS-1 and DWSS-2, to cover the early morning orbit around 5:30, complementary to the NOAA JPSS satellites in the early-afternoon orbit (13:30) and the EUMETSAT MetOp SG satellites in the mid-morning orbit (9:30).
In 2012 the DWSS programme was cancelled as such, and the DMSP follow-on is being re-defined.
The provided description of DWSS-1 and DWSS-2 refers to the project as it was proposed and not approved.
