Details on this mission type
Full name IR temperature/humidity sounding from GEO
Definition This type of mission designates medium spectral resolution spectrometers or radiometers operating in the IR part of the spectrum, in geostationary orbit.
Relevant instruments and their contribution

The sorting column describes how the instruments, by design, have the potential to contribute to certain pre-determined capabilities, assuming nominal operation of space and ground segments. For this particular capability, instrument performance is considered to be driven by:

  • spectral resolution (hyperspectral or radiometer).

 Sorting criteria and colour code:

  1. [green] IR spectrometer with spectral resolution ≤0.7 cm-1 in the range 8.5-15 μm and ≤1.3 cm-1 in the ranges 3.5-5 and 5-8.5 μm. High vertical resolution profile through the whole troposphere and the low stratosphere, with frequent sampling for instability monitoring and wind profile in clear air
  2. -
  3. [yellow] IR radiometer with >=4 channels in the CO2 15 μm band, and >=2  channels in each of the CO2 4.3 μm and H2O 6.3 μm bands. Coarse vertical resolution profile through the whole troposphere, with frequent sampling for instability monitoring.
