FY-4A was launched on December 2016 and has nearly three-times more spectral channels than the earlier generation of FY-2 satellites.

The Chinese second-generation satellite will support forecasts and warnings, numerical weather prediction, wildfire and space weather monitoring. It is expected that a wide range of uses and societal benefits will be provided, including greater support to disaster management.
